Cyber Recklessness is a Threat to Democracy

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) strongly condemns the fake news circulating on social media about the death of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. This malicious rumor is not only false but also irresponsible and damaging to the individual and the nation.
We are deeply concerned about the increasing spread of fake news on social media, which has become a scourge on our democracy. The cybercrime law should be enforced to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. High-profile individuals like the former Heads of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Gen. Ibrahim Babaginda, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the former Governor of Imo State and others have also fallen victim to these cyber recklessness.
While we support freedom of speech, it should not come at the expense of truth. We urge all Nigerians to be responsible in their use of social media and to verify information before sharing it.
The YPP stands with the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and commends his dedication to ensuring the integrity of our electoral process. We will continue to support efforts to promote truth, accountability, and responsible communication in our society.
Signed:
Comrade Bishop Amakiri
National Chairman
