COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 23RD NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (NEC) MEETING

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 23RD NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (NEC) MEETING

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) held its 23rd meeting on Monday, 7th April 2025, at the National Secretariat in Abuja. After deliberating on key issues affecting the party and the nation, the NEC resolved as follows:
  1. The NEC ratified the nomination of Hajiya Aisha Mahmoud as the Acting Deputy National Chairman of the party. The committee expresses its full confidence in her and looks forward to her contributions to the continued growth and success of the party.
  2. The NEC ratified the 2025 electoral guidelines for the party’s election activities, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Anambra State Governorship election. These guidelines are designed to ensure transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in the electoral process.
  3. The NEC reviewed the petition brought against Dr. Joshua Owulo, the Deputy National Secretary, by the leadership of the YPP Plateau State chapter. The petition accused Dr. Owulo of gross misconduct and actions that nearly led to the extinction of the party in Plateau State. A seven-member disciplinary committee was established, in line with the YPP constitution, to investigate the allegations. This committee, led by Prof. Tosan Blessing Harriman, will submit its findings and recommendations to the NWC and NEC respectively on or before 25th April 2025.
  4. The NEC strongly condemned the incessant killings in Nigeria, especially in Uromi, Edo State and Bokkos, Plateau State. The committee expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity in these regions and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently reconsider the current security strategy. The NEC advocates for a more robust and community-based security approach, including the arming of communities under a regulated program, to enable citizens to defend themselves against bandits and terrorists. The NEC believes that the loss of innocent lives due to insecurity must end immediately.
  5. The NEC condemned the ongoing suppression of free speech and the unjustified clamping down on peaceful protesters, particularly the Takeitback movement. These actions are viewed as direct violations of democratic principles and the fundamental rights of citizens to express dissent. The NEC emphasizes that Nigeria is no longer under military rule and warns against the dangerous trend of stifling free speech. The right to protest and express differing opinions is a cornerstone of any functioning democracy, and its suppression undermines the progress Nigeria has made.
In conclusion, the NEC reiterates its commitment to defending democracy, upholding the rights of Nigerians, and addressing the pressing issues facing the nation.
